Happy Anniversary

My parents, at the ripe young ages of 42 and 41 (and I say that because I know they're proud of it ;-), have been married for 23 years today! Their anniversary isn't only a celebration of them, but of our whole family.

I was telling my supervisor today at work that it is their anniversary, and she remarked... They must have been married young! Yes, at 18 and 19, I told her, which made her ask, Were they high-school sweethearts?? Yep! That's so cute! What was it...she was a cheerleader and he was on the football team or something? And I told her the rest of the story, which might suffer slightly from my memory, but is more or less the way it happened--once upon a time.

No, I said. Well, she was a cheerleader. But he was definitely not a football player. He was a little guy, and says that she was way out of his league. You know, she modeled cute jogging outfits in magazines and was a cheerleader. She was in the "high-falutin" social circles and he wasn't.

So what happened?? How did they get together? she asked. I'm not really sure, but I think he just asked her out and she said ok. And they were together. He had to go to church with her family to be able to date her though, so he did, and I'm sure he had Sunday afternoon dinner with them too.

(Cuuuuuute, says Kara.) They eventually broke up though, and they both thought it was over for good. In fact, Dad decided he wanted to join the navy, and on the day he was signing up, or leaving, or something, she showed up--at the same place--and said she really did love him and wanted him to stay with her. So he changed his mind and stayed, and the rest is history...

Kara loved that part. I'm thinkin' movie quality stuff here!, she said. That's so cute!

So while I might not remember every detail I was told years ago, let's just say, we're all happy he chose Mom over the navy and that our family was born. Then, over 22 years later, I got married in the very same little Baptist church and started counting my own days of marriage. Thank you, Mom and Dad! :-)

  1. That's so sweet and adorable of you dear ~ made me laugh and smile; I love you. I'm so glad our family was born too.

PS ~ It's okay about the minor details not being perfectly accurate; the essence of them is.

And, we're going out to a swanky restaurant for a late dinner.

  3. Hi. Dad here. Umm, I love your recollections. They are sweet. Allow me, though. I WAS a football player (the only freshman [at 132lbs.] on the varsity team, and I stood in that beleaguered position without fainting through the end of that beleaguered season! To mention, baseball [starting varsity shortstop as a freshman]and basketball.)

The rest is good! Love you too and oh so proud of you. Both!

I so love the Mixson family and am very glad the decision to abandon the navy was made!
